Here’s a useful widget that lets you display content for different post types such as Pages, Posts and your own custom post types on your sidebar. Features include:

  • Options to order by Post Title, Date and Menu Order
  • Inclusion of Featured Image
  • Customize number of posts displayed
  • Specify number of characters for post excerpt

You can see the demo on the sidebar where I feature my latest projects.

  1. Hi- When I added the widget to the main sidebar it doesn’t display anything and it makes the whole white content area go away so you only see the background color

    • Hi Matt – if you have a link to your site where it’s happening, I can check to see what might be causing it. It might have something to do with your CSS.

  2. Hi,

I installed this plugin on WP 3.4. I have one post in my “Posts” area and 1 page in the Pages area. In Settings > Reading, the setting is “Static Page (Front Page)”. After activating the plugin, the main page static content disappears, and I don’t see the expected effect. What might I be doing wrong?

    • Do you have a sample page up that I can check? I’m thinking, it might be with your custom CSS – but to know for sure it’ll help if I can check out the page where it happens.

        • It looks like there was a missing function that wasn’t loading that someone else had pointed out. I updated the WordPress repository with the fixed version – check to see if it will work with the latest version of the plugin. If not, just let me know. Thanks!

  3. Heads up – I just installed the plugin on WP 3.4.1, and get “call to undefined function word_trimmer()” error. When I checked the code, this function was indeed not defined anywhere. If I replace it with a built-in wp_trim_excerpt, for example, the plugin works as expected.

    • Thanks for the heads up Silvia. I just found out that I had two versions of the plugin file and had uploaded the one without that custom function (because I had it in my functions.php file already for a custom theme). I already updated the repository with the fixed one. Thanks a bunch! :)

  4. Hello there,

I love your plugin: Custom Post Display

    I have 2 questions:

    1. Is it possible to make it work with multisite having the option to select the blog I want to bring the little excerpt and image?

Your blog only allows me to show the posts of the main blog but I want also to bring the posts of the other posts on the multisite option.

    2. How can I customize the posts using CSS? I want two column display.

    Thank you very much.

    • Hi Luis! Thanks for using my plugin :)

I haven’t tested this on multisite, so I’m not sure how it’ll work for that set up.
For CSS, you can customize it using the style.css of your blog but it might be tricky to get it to show a two column display. I’ll try to see if I can make it as an option in later versions.
